What is Massively Human?

by Kathleen Seeley

Welcome to my new page… my new brand…a new way to represent my living, laughing, loving, learning, leading and of course… laundry… Massively Human Leadership™.

In case you haven’t noticed its 2017….a brand New Year! Its starting out great for me…I have woken up, still breathing in and out… TWO DAYS IN A ROW! Yay Me! A weak attempt at humor but as we know humor often comes from sadness. I notice today I don’t take that lightly; a dear friend passed away last night…unexpected… my heart is heavy…so I wake up today grateful to be breathing, grateful to have known him grateful for the possibility that lies in each ending and each beginning.

So 2017 … I’ll admit it, I’m gonna go all cliché on you… new beginnings, what’s done is done, it’s a fresh start and…well you know the drill… It’s true though, for me anyway, a New Year brings an opportunity to clean up messes, evaluate goals, examine priorities, let go of beliefs that no longer serve and consider broadening perspective.

A time to examine the quality of relationships and take the initiative to mend some, end some and create space for new ones. All of this reflection is designed to allow me to take another bold step closer to knowing who I am, and tapping into my own possibility.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about Legacy. Maybe it’s my age…I’ll be 53 this year, but I notice my mind and heart turns to deeper contemplation of meaning and purpose, impact and responsibility.

That existential question, you know the one… WTF is the point of all of this? Not from a ‘Oh poor me I’ve had enough, make it stop’ kind of a place but more from a Legacy kind of perspective. What is the trail I want to leave behind?

Anyone who has heard me speak has heard me quote Peggy Tabor Millan “You never touch someone so lightly that you do not leave a trace”. I live by this and it is woven into all of my leadership teachings…to pay close attention to the trail left behind by actions, inactions, thoughts and stories…

Thinking about my own Legacy led me to reflecting about my mom’s trail and what she left behind as a guide. My mom taught me many life lessons; these are ‘up’ for me right now:

1. If you want sympathy its between shit and syphilis in the dictionary! 2. There is always room for one more at the dinner table, just throw another potato in the pot! 3. It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice! 4. Always leave something cleaner than you found it! 5. She also often said “damn it to hell”; I’ve never figured out what that meant but it got my attention!

Through these particular life lessons my mom taught me compassion, generosity, humility, responsibility and to be comfortable in ambiguity.

So how do I honor her lessons, pass them along with my own flavor?

I decided to mindfully examine what it means to be massively human. I intend to honor the trail my mother left behind by taking what she taught me and blaze a trail forward; my intention is to ignite passion in myself, and others, to be massively human… This will be my journey to put words to my experience… you want to join me?
